Summary
This case demonstrates feline gastrointestinal eosinophilic sclerosing fibroplasia (FGESF) as an important differential diagnosis for gastrointestinal neoplasias. FGESF is a rarely diagnosed, chronic intestinal inflammation, which can be misinterpreted as a malignant tumor. An European short hair cat was presented with chronic weight loss and decreased appetite. Major clinical finding was a palpable abdominal mass. Radiographic imaging lead to an intraabdominal fist-sized mass of unknown origin. Diagnostic laparotomy showed multiple masses, which were grossly interpreted as malignant tumor but histopathologically identified as gastrointestinal eosinophilic sclerosing fibroplasia. The patient was euthanized before the completion of the histopathologic examination.
