Summary
Laparoscopy has gained an increasing role in veterinary medicine over the last years. Nowadays, laparoscopy is not longer only used for diagnostic purposes and sample collection, but also for more complex procedures. All forms of castration are among the routinely performed laparoscopic procedures these days. More complex procedures include prophylactic gastropexy and adrenalectomy. In general, the procedures can be performed either as a pure laparoscopic technique or as a laparoscopic-assisted technique, respectively. Depending on the surgeon´s experience and the available equipment, most of the procedures can be completed with laparoscopy. The main advantages of laparoscopy are a reduced morbidity for the patient, faster reconvalescence times, and the superior accessibility of certain regions in the body, in conjunction with a significant magnification through the laparoscope. Generally, laparoscopy is safe procedure, but places certain demands on the anesthetist and surgeon. The latter should be able to perform the according procedures by laparotomy and be prepared any time to convert to open surgery, if intraoperative complications occur.
