Summary
Aelurostrongylus abstrusus is the most widespread cause of lungworm disease in the cat besides Troglostrongylus spp. In the past ten years, this parasite has become increasingly important in the diagnosis of respiratory diseases in domestic cats. The present case report of an infected seven-month-old European shorthair cat is one of the few case descriptions in Germany. The faecal Baermann test is currently the investigation of choice in detecting feline aelurostrongylosis. This case report gives an overview of possible diagnostic and therapeutic options for aelurostrongylosis. In Germany, there are two licensed preparations available for the treatment of lungworm disease caused by Aelurostrongylus abstrusus: Broadline® (eprinomectin, fipronil, S-methoprene, praziquantel) and Profender® (emodepside, praziquantel). In the present case, a modified treatment regimen of 2 mg/kg milbemycin oxime and 5 mg/kg praziquantel given once weekly for eight weeks was likewise effective.
