Ethylene glycol intoxication in a cat

Zusammenfassung

Eine neunjährige Katze wurde mit ataktischem Gangbild, Ventroflexion des Kopfes, stuporartigem Verhalten und Hypothermie in der Praxis vorgestellt. Bei der Palpation des Abdomens fielen die beidseits schmerzhaften Nieren auf. Die Blutbefunde zeigten eine metabolische Azidose, eine Azotämie, eine Hyperkaliämie sowie eine Hypokalzämie. Die Urinuntersuchung ergab eine Kristallurie, Glukosurie und eine Isosthenurie. Trotz schlechter Prognose wurde ein Therapieversuch gestartet. Das Tier wurde aufgrund der Verschlechterung seines Zustandes und der Laborwerte 19 Stunden später euthanasiert. Die histopathologische Untersuchung der Nieren ergab Nekrosen der Tubulusepithelien mit intratubulärem Nachweis von Kalziumoxalatkristallen. Eine Intoxikation mit Ethylenglykol wurde vermutet.

Summary

A nine-year-old cat was presented in a lethargic state with ataxic gait, ventroflexion of the neck and hypothermia. Palpation of the abdomen revealed tenderness of the kidneys on both sides. Blood tests indicated metabolic acidosis, azotaemia, hyperkalaemia and hypocalcaemia. Urine tests also revealed crystalluria, glycosuria and isosthenuria. Despite a poor prognosis, an attempt was made to treat the animal. However, it had to be euthanised 19 hours later due to a deterioration of its condition and test results. A histopathological examination of the kidneys revealed necrosis of the tubular epithelial cells and intratubular calcium oxalate crystals. Ethylene glycol intoxication was suspected.
