Congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM) in two dogs with spontaneous pneumothorax

Zusammenfassung
Im vorliegenden Fallbericht werden zwei Hunde im Alter von 20 und 22 Monaten beschrieben, die mit spontanem Pneumothorax ohne Vorgeschichte chronischer Atemwegserkrankungen vorgestellt wurden. Bei beiden Hunden wurde nach bildgebender Diagnostik in Form von Röntgenbildern und CT-Studien des Thorax der Verdacht auf das Vorliegen einer fokalen, zystischen, pulmonalen Entwicklungsfehlbildung erhoben. Nach erfolgter Lobektomie des Lobus medius (Patient 1) bzw. Lobus caudalis dexter (Patient 2) und histopathologischer Untersuchung wurde in beiden Fällen die Diagnose einer kongenitalen pulmonalen Malformation der Luftwege (congenital pulmonary airway malformation, CPAM) Stocker Typ 1 erhoben. Obwohl die CPAM die häufigste kongenitale Malformation der Lunge beim Menschen darstellt, ist dies, unseres Wissens nach, der erste Fallbericht von zwei Hunden mit CPAM Stocker Typ 1.
Summary
This case report presents two dogs, 20 and 22 months old, with spontaneous pneumothorax without previous history of chronic respiratory disease. Diagnostic imaging of the thorax in form of X-rays and computed tomography (CT) raised suspicions of both dogs having focal, cystic, pulmonary developmental malformation. Following lobectomy, i.e. the lobus medius of the first and the lobus caudalis dexter of the second patient, and histopathological examination, both patients were diagnosed with congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM) Stocker type 1. Even though the CPAM is the most common congenital pulmonary malformation of the human lungs, to our knowledge is this the first case of CPAM Stocker type 1 described in dogs.
