Causes of a decreased Na:K ratio: 50 dogsSeveral conditions can lead to hyponatraemia and/orhyperkalaemia.Markedly increased blood potassium resultsin bradyarrhythmia and potentially cardiac arrest. Causes ofhyperkalaemia are decreased potassium excretion, increasedintake or compartmental shift from cells to extracellularfluid. Classically, a decreased Na:K ratio in dogs is seen inhypoadrenocorticism; other reported causes are urinaryoutflow obstruction, marked gastrointestinal disease andrepeated chylothorax drainage. The medical records of 50dogs with a serum Na:K ratio
