Summary
In 942 primarily elderly dogs, the blood concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of acute inflammation, were measured as a component of their health profiles and compared with the animals’ total leucocyte counts, a commonly used but unreliable method of determining the presence of inflammation. No correlation could be found between the leucocyte counts and CRP. The results of the study suggest that CRP could be helpful in the detection of both clinical and subclinical inflammatory processes in elderly dogs.
