Summary
Hygiene management in veterinary clinics and practises: a focus on infection prevention Multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) such as methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) and extendedspectrum ß-lactamase (ESBL-)producing bacteria are an ever-increasing challenge regarding infection control and prevention strategies both for ambulatory and clinical veterinary medicine. One of the most important transmission modes for MDROs is direct or indirect contact involving the hands of employees. Strict adherence to alcoholic hand scrub use is essential, as well as the adherence to other standard precautions (for example, the correct use of medical gloves and surface disinfection) is crucial in the prevention of cross-transmission. Hygiene means teamwork. Operators of clinics are advised to establish a consistent hygiene management. Establishing standards and continuing education of staff, for instance, lead to improved compliance.
